Real Bodies at Bally’s in Las Vegas

by John Hayden Leave a Comment

Thanks so much to Real Bodies at Bally’s Las Vegas for providing us with complimentary tickets.  All opinions are 100 percent ours!

WHAT IS IT?

Real Bodies is a unique experience designed to allow you to learn about how the bodies work but seeing real, preserved bodies.  The exhibit contains over 20 actual human bodies and significantly more displays involving real body parts.

THAT SOUNDS WEIRD, WILL I BE CREEPED OUT? IS IT FOR KIDS?

The Real Bodies exhibit is designed for all ages and is entirely kid appropriate.  There is a section dealing with human development that involves fetuses, that may make some people uncomfortable but there is a warning in advance and a path for you to easily skip it if you prefer.

The presentation of the bodies is done in a scientific manner so it should not be disturbing to most people.

WHAT WILL I SEE?

The exhibit is designed to teach how the body works and brings that into reality in a way that you never saw in Science class.  The exhibit is broken down into 10 galleries dealing with various aspects of the human body ranging from movement, to thought, to love and more.  Each gallery contains human specimens placed in positions to illustrate the concepts. For example, see how the muscles stretch and various parts of the body act when throwing a baseball or serving in tennis.

WHERE IS IT LOCATED? WHAT IS THE COST?

Real Bodies is located in the Bally’s Hotel/Casino conveniently located on the Las Vegas strip.  The cost of admission is $29.95 per person.

IS IT WORTH IT?

If you are interested in learning more about the human body then this is a great stop.  It is also much different than the other types of entertainment in Las Vegas so it can provide a refreshing change of pace.  If you are looking for a freak show then this exhibit isn’t for you. We spent about an hour in the exhibit but times could vary based on how much time you spend reading all of the placards.  I felt that it was worth my time and the price is very fair based on entertainment costs in Vegas.

5 Must Do Romantic Things In Vegas

by John Hayden Leave a Comment

Las Vegas has so much to offer!  You can tailor a weekend there in so many ways.  It’s a natural pick for a bachelor or bachelorette party, there are tons of things to do with kids and it’s a perfect place to spend a weekend with your significant other.  In an earlier post, we talked about doing the city up on a budget, for this adventure I’d recommend saving up or winning big at the tables.

1) Pick the perfect hotel – There are tons of great places to stay while you are in Vegas so it’s hard to narrow it down to just one, however, if I had to narrow it down, I would pick the Bellagio.  The resort was built in 1998 which makes it almost ancient by Vegas strip standards but it is still as classy and awe inspiring.  A tip to the front desk clerk should score you a nice room with a view of the fountains and the Vegas strip.  A bottle wine while watching the choreographed fountain show from your room is a perfect ending to your night on the town.  Honorable mention:  The Aria, which is a swanky hotel with awesome restaurants and a great location.

2) Limo rides down the strip – If you are looking to impress, it’s hard to beat a limousine ride through the city at night.  Many limos will offer you a bottle of champagne for the ride.  If you want to get a little more adventurous you can take the strip tour via helicopter as well.

3) Dinner at the Top of the World – I have eaten at a lot of great restaurants around the country but nothing tops the experience of the Top of the World restaurant at the Stratosphere.  Be sure to make reservations in advance and I would recommend that you get a table a little before sundown.  The restaurant sits at the top of the Stratosphere Tower and revolves.  You will take in breathtaking panoramic views of the strip as well as the mountains.  If you are seated shortly before sundown you’ll be able to watch as all the lights come on throughout Las Vegas.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss it.

4) Take a stroll through Paris – Paris may be the most romantic stop in the world but the Paris Hotel and Casino is a nice substitute when in Vegas.  Enjoy brunch at Mon Ami Gabi and take a ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower for a scenic view of the city.  Honorable mention:  If France isn’t your thing, the Venetian, further down the strip, can give you a taste of another classic European city.  There’s plenty of shopping and you can even take a gondola ride while being serenaded.

5) Spend an afternoon at the Valley of Fire – The Valley of Fire State Park is about 50 miles from Vegas close to Lake Meade.  You can take a few hours away from the hustle and bustle and spend some quality time walking where the dinosaurs once roamed.  The surroundings are breathtaking so it’s a great place for taking photos of nature or provide the perfect backdrop for that romantic selfie.

5 Must Do Romantic Things in Las Vegas

The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas

You may have heard it on the news, one of the most over-the- top, irreverent, restaurant in the United States…The Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas, Nevada. The restaurant has gained notoriety for encouraging overeating, free meals for anyone over 350 pounds and for patrons actually having heart attacks inside. This place isn’t for everyone so if you’re easily offended or have your kids with you, I’d pass on this one but if you are looking for something unique, it’s an interesting way to spend your lunch hour.

The Heart Attack Grill

Before you walk in you will notice a large scale for anyone who wants to accept their free meal offer for patrons over 350 pounds (don’t worry, they won’t make you get on the scale). When you go inside, you are dressed in a hospital gown before being escorted to your seat by waitresses dressed as nurses. There are tv screens that play a loop of the news coverage the grill has received among other décor paying homage to their theme.

The menu is unlike anything you have probably seen before, there are no diet drinks, they serve Mexican Coke and a variety of beers and hard liquor (served in a pill bottle), oh and you can order a pack of smokes too. The menu prominently features the prices and the fact that there is an 8.1% sales tax “for our wasteful government to squander.”

The Heart Attack Grill

The food choices are fairly simple hot dogs (called coronary dogs) or hamburgers (referred to as bypass burgers…single through octuple bypass available) you can also add up to forty slices of bacon. For sides, they offer “flat-liner fries” and onion rings. If you still have room, they have a shake available that they proudly proclaim has “the world’s highest butterfat content.”

I opted for the double cheeseburger and fries (pro-tip: don’t order more than you can eat because you can receive a spanking by one of the nurses with a wood paddle…I saw it happen to one guy while I was there). The burger was pretty good and priced reasonably by Las Vegas standards (about $11). A trip to the Heart Attack Grill is more about the experience than the food in my opinion which makes is worth checking out.

HOW TO DO LAS VEGAS…CHEAP

by John Hayden 2 Comments

Las Vegas is one of my favorite places to visit but if you are not careful your week in the desert could end up breaking the bank. There are many ways to do Las Vegas on a budget!  Here are ten ways to offset some of the losses you’ll have in the casino.

Free or Cheap things to do in Las Vegas! Ways to go to Las Vegas on a budget

1) RIDE THE MONORAIL AND WALK – I always choose a hotel near a monorail stop, this will save you a lot of money on taxi fares and will minimize the time you’re in the scorching sun. The monorail only travels on the Las Vegas strip so you will need to plan other transportation if you want to visit off strip sites like Fremont Street or the Hoover Dam. I recommend buying a multi-day monorail pass before you leave for your trip. Sometimes a quick Google search will turn up a monorail discount and you can save even more.

2) STAY DURING THE WEEK – The best hotel deals in Vegas (or almost anywhere for that matter) can be found if you stay during the week. There are some very nice hotels on the strip that can be had for less than $50 a night during the week. If you have to stay over a weekend, there are still good deals to be found if you shop for them. I tend to limit my searches to the strip area so I can take the monorail.  There are several quality hotels that are a quick walk to the strip that tend to be more affordable than staying on the strip itself.

3) USE THE APPS – If the monorail can’t take you to where you want to go, use Uber or Lyft. It’s easy to find a code for a free your ride when you sign up and the prices are much more affordable than a taxis. Also look at airbandb.com and vrbo.com for places to stay. Last year I found a three bedroom condo at a resort a couple blocks off the strip for less than $100 per night, if you’re traveling with friends you could save a fortune.

4) DRINK FREE OR AT LEAST CHEAP – If you like to have a cold beer to cool down there is no reason why you should be paying for one in Vegas. Almost every casino will have a bar with video machines in it. At nearly all of them, if you are playing a game at the machine, the bartender will bring you free drinks as long as you stay. I like to watch sports and it’s easy to find a bar with your favorite game on and a down a few cold ones for nothing more than a tip and a few hands of quarter video poker.

5) FREEMONT STREET EXPERIENCE – If it’s your first time to Vegas, you should make at least one trip to Freemont Street. When you think of Vegas you think of flashing neon and Fremont Street is the best places to see all the vintage style lights. Several blocks are pedestrian only and covered by a gigantic canopy which puts on periodic light shows nightly. It’s totally free to walk around and in the evening there will be street performers and people dressed as a variety of characters. It’s an experience, for sure.

6) GO TO THE CIRCUS – Circus Circus is at the far end of the strip but it’s a must see if you are traveling with kids. The have free circus acts as well as a large indoor amusement park. You only have to pay if you want to ride anything but you are free to walk around and throw down a few dollars on your favorite carnival games.

7) WALK AROUND THE CASINOS – It doesn’t cost anything to enter the casinos and if you’ve never been in town, you could spend an entire day just checking out the different casinos. Many of them are themed like the Luxor (which is a gigantic pyramid) and the New York New York (which has a New York skyline built out front) and several others have beautiful flowers like the Wynn and the Bellagio.

Free or Cheap things to do in Las Vegas! Ways to go to Las Vegas on a budget

8) BIG ELVIS – When you Vegas you have to have an Elvis experience and Big Elvis is the way to go. At the piano bar in Harrah’s, Pete Vallee puts on a short Elvis tribute several times a day. He sits on a giant throne and sings his heart out. Times are posted in front of the bar and admission is free.

9) SEE A SHOW – Las Vegas is known for some of the best entertainment in the world but that doesn’t mean you should pay full price for it. Show tickets for nearly ever act are available at a discount the day of the show at various Tix4Tonight stands around the city. Sometimes you can save half of the price by buying your tickets this way. If there is a very popular show that you’ve planned your vacation around you are safer buying your tickets in advance but if you’re flexible about what you want to see going to Tix4Tonight if your best value.

10) M&M’s WORLD AND THE WORLD OF COCA-COLA – These two places are free to enter and are both in the heart of the Las Vegas strip. M&M’s world is four floors packed with M&M merchandise and a free film. You can even create a personalized M&M. Further down the street is the World of Coca-Cola where you can buy all things Coke, meet the Coca-Cola polar bear and sample different Coke products from around the world.
